Introduction
In the complex world of modern business, the concept of 'simplexity' — simplifying complexity — is more relevant than ever. This article shows how I have applied simplexity in various aspects of my professional and private life, demonstrating its immense value in transformational leadership.
What is "simplexity"?
Simplexity involves distilling complex ideas, processes, or systems into simpler, more digestible forms. It's about striking the right balance between complexity and simplicity, making heavy concepts accessible and actionable.
My Journey with Simplexity
1. 🏠 Bringing Home Transformation:
As a functional lead in transformation initiatives, my focus was on managing the human aspects of change. This involved simplifying complex organizational changes into understandable and actionable components, ensuring they resonated with and were achievable by the team. The result? Everyone knows what the transformation means in their own field of work.
2. 📚 Upskilling & reskilling:
Aligning technological transformation with human needs, I co-designed and implemented upskilling and reskilling programs. This approach made the digital shift more accessible and sustainable, showcasing simplexity in action. The result? Team members got newly needed skills or are on their way to get them.
3. 🌎 Facilitating Cross-Cultural Collaboration:
I prioritized managing perspectives and needs of groups with diverse cultural backgrounds into a unified approach. By simplifying and adapting our narrative, we built effective cross-border teams, enhancing global collaboration. The result? We break barriers and function as one team, no matter which part of the world we call home.
4. ⛓️ Connecting the Dots Across the Organization:
I am passionate about putting people who performed similar processes and tasks in different parts of the organization together. This not only fosters learning and idea-sharing but also creates a platform for discussing challenges and successes - simplexity in practice. The result? We create transparency and allow teams to work with the best possible tools and processes.
5. 👩🏻🤝👩🏾 Mentoring:
I am fortunate to be able to mentor other colleagues on their career or the balance of work and life. This involved breaking down complex challenges into manageable steps, guiding them towards clarity and purpose. The result? The mentee can reflect on their own agenda and next steps to take.
+1. 🏃🏼♀️ Trail Running:
As a passionate trail runner, I apply simplexity to my approach in the beautiful, but sometimes quite long mountain races. By breaking down the 50+km distance into smaller, manageable segments - often until the next aid station 1-2 km away - I focus on one part at a time. The result? I am not overwhelmed by what is all ahead and I can focus on the immediate and actionable next steps (literally).
The Benefits of Embracing Simplexity
- Enhanced Clarity: Simplifying complex ideas leads to better understanding and engagement.
- Increased Efficiency: Streamlining processes, focusing on the human aspect, leads to more efficient outcomes.
- Effective Problem-Solving: Breaking down complex issues helps identify core problems and innovative solutions.
- Better Decision-Making: Simplexity ensures decisions are analytically sound and empathetically informed.
Conclusion
Embracing simplexity has been a cornerstone of my transformational leadership journey, allowing me to effectively manage change, drive innovation, and lead teams to success. Whether in the meeting rooms or on mountain trails, transforming complexity into simplicity has been key to unlocking potential and achieving outstanding results.
